The Elk Valley RV Park and Fly Shop is located in La Veta, Colorado. We found this little campground when we went to visit some friends who have some property in the mountains on the west side of La Veta pass. We have been there for two years running and have reservations for this year (2008) again. It is a small campground in a small town but we really enjoy going there.
La Veta is located west of Walsenburg, Colorado twelve miles from the intersection of Highway 160 and SR12. You come through La Veta on SR12 as though you were going to Cuchara. The campground would be on your right side across from the golf course.
The campground has 25 sites with 4 pull thrus and the rest backins. They have full hookups with 30/50 amps and WiFi available. If you play golf, there is a very nice golf course just across the street from the campground. There is a small recreation room with washers and dryers. Also, in the same building there are restrooms and showers. They have a small gift shop in the office area with limited supplies and fishing supplies. Fly fishing is the specialty. They are open only from April 1 to October 31. The elevation there is 7125 feet.
This is a small campground in a small town but that is part of why we like going there. The scenery is beautiful and there are some nice scenic drives that you can take. SR12 is called the "Highway of Legends" and runs from Walsenburg through La Veta, Cuchara around the Spanish Peaks and onto Trinidad. The little town of Cuchara is interesting in itself. There are a lot of Mule Deer that roam through the town of La Veta and can be seen in the surrounding country side. Last year (2007) they had several black bear sightings in town. This is a nice place to visit.
