West Glacier KOA
We stayed at the West Glacier KOA when we took a trip to Glacier National Park. This is one of the nicest KOAs in which we have stayed. There are several other campgrounds in the area but we are glad that we chose this one because of its location and the amenities that they have to offer.
The campground is located a few miles west of the town of West Glacier, MT off of SH 2. We came in from Kalispel, MT but you can approach it from the east on SH 2. There are 108 sites with 30/50 amp service and water, but only 52 have sewer dumps. Some of the sites have shade but many of them don't. The site that we were in had a small shade tree. There are 31 tent sites and 29 rental units.
They have a lot of amenities at the campground and they are kept up very well. There is a restuarant, gift shop, snack bar, inclosed game room and rec area, restrooms, and showers. There is also a heated pool and spa, horseshoes, and play area for the kids. Pets are welcomed and there is plenty of space to walk your dog. They also have WiFi connection, but when we were there we couldn't receive it at the site in which we were located. I had to go to the rec area to get a good signal.
The Glacier National Park is the main attraction in this area, or at least that is why we went there. It is a magnificant park with spectacular views, many of which can be seen by taking the Going To The Sun Road. Taking this road is a must do while you are there. Because the road is so narrow and curvey, there is a length restriction of 20 ft and width restriction of 8 ft for vehicles taking the road. My truck barely met the restrictions. If you don't want to drive yourself, you can take one of the open air red buses. These buses will pick you up at your campground. If you do drive yourself you can go all the way to St. Mary on the other side of the park and have lunch as we did. I say lunch and not dinner because I wouldn't want to drive that road at night.
Inside the park there are many hiking trails that end up at areas with spectacular views of natures beauty. We took one hike that ended up at a lake where there were several water falls that flowed into the lake. This was a moderate hike and took several hours to complete. If hiking isn't your thing, you can enjoy the beauty of nature on one of the raft trips. We took an evening dinner trip that was slow and peaceful.
If you are interested in taking a side trip, there is a little community by the name of Polebridge that you can visit. It's claim to fame is the one and only store in town. They are known for their bakery. We were given directions and made the trip. Biggest problem is that it is a gravel road almost all of the way. At one point we almost turned around but continued on. Glad we did, but is was mighty dusty. Picutre of Polebridge included.
What a great place to visit and if you go we highly recommend the West Glacier KOA.
