Durango Riverside Resort and RV Park is located 15 miles north of Durango, Colorado on the Animas River.  As you are going north or south you take CR 250 off of US 550 and go .2 miles to the entrance of the park.  I personally would not come into Durango from the north on US 550 because you have to cross 3 very steep and winding mountain passes to get there.  I suggest coming from the south, it is easier on your nerves.  However, there are a lot of brave campers who go over those passes.

I was told by the staff that this campground was a former KOA campground and was recently bought out and has new ownership.  They have affiliated themselves with "Coast to Coast" and are in the process of improving the facilities.  They are are building new cabins that will be self contained with bathroom and cooking facility.  The interior roads are being upgraded and concrete patios added to the sites.  There are other additions that will make this a much nicer campground than it is already.

The campground has 86 RV sites (17 backup to the Animas River), 21 cabins (some of these are on the river) and 23 tent sites.  Thirty two of the RV sites have only 30 amp electricity with the others having 30/50 amp.  As improvements are made they will be converting more sites to 30/50 amp.  Each site has sewer and water.  They have just built some nice new restroom and shower facilities.  Other amenities include a heated pool, laundry, playground, picnic table and fire ring at each site, a small store with some supplies, free WiFi, cable TV, propane, and a small restaurant.  The restaurant has a patio connected to it for outside eating.  They also have outdoor movies on the patio at night.  They provide an escort to your site and have daily trash pickup.  Pets are welcome and there is even a veterinary clinic next door.

We really enjoyed this campground.  We had site 7 which backed up to the Animas River.  It was nice to be able to sit outside and watch the river flow by and listen to the sound.  There is something magical about watching the river.  Very relaxing and very soothing!  The staff at the camproung was very nice and very helpful.  Their restaurant was open Wednesday through Sunday and the food was very good.  They offered free all-u-can eat pancakes with any purchase at breakfast, therefore, we ate breakfast there almost every moring.

This is a very nice Good Sam campground and I believe that it will get better as they complete their new additions.
